Photowalk with Martijn Barth
2023, October 19
Yesterday Martijn asked me last minute if I wanted to go for a walk today. Of course!!
Since Martijn has been submitting for the Dutch Street Magazine, I find his images very appealing. Some of his work is from the same neighbourhood where we live.
We met at the Tropenmuseum and walked through the entire city in three hours. To Waterlooplein, Nieuwmarkt, Zeedijk, Warmoesstraat, Dam Square, Spui, Leidseplein, Museumplein, Albert Cuyp, Ceintuurbaan, Wibautstraat and Oosterpark. We certainly took our street photography steps.
Martijn shoots with his DSLR and I shoot secretly with my little Ricoh GR.
I usually want to go through the scene sort of unseen, but I learned today that it isn't necessary. Martijn kindly asked a man if he could make a photo of him, no problem. With the next person he didn't ask, but because of his kindness you could tell that the person was totally okay with it. I shouldn't be so afraid of rejection. Be kind and humble, that really works.
A nice question from Martijn that stuck with me while walking was whether I am more focused in another city. Conclusion, in a new environment everything is super interesting and I want to absorb everything. So it definitely helps to get triggered again. But I am also convinced that my curiosity and the trigger is not less in an environment that I know very well. Because I can turn off everything I already know and I only have to  concentrate and focus on the unknown in the known.
